Medieval Faire of Wil, Switzerland

First the pics and then the blah... :)
Enjoy!
Well, what I can say now is that it was the right decision to go to Wil. It was both interesting and special. The only thing that really was lacking were more people in costumes as there were very few. Maybe in the evening more came, as then the 2 concerts would have been held, but then again I'm not sure about that.
The location was very nice, old town of Wil, and it was well organized, like... no cars allowed in there, etc.
Lucky for us they seem to not have been able to organize someone to sell entrance tickets etc. so we got in free - basically everyone did until maybe about 3pm and we were there at 10am. :)
There were many locals visiting, having the most curious expressions on their faces... I'm not sure this faire has been in Wil before. Maybe not? :)
Anyway... the stalls were good and very interesting. As you can see from some of the photos. :) We both did go to the palm reader! And she absolutely stunned me (well, and mum as well) because she got simply everything SO accurate. The things she pointed out were the important ones about me and definitely not some everyday stuff that you could say about everyone or tell from the way a person looks or some such. We were both very amazed! And she was a really nice woman, too, we chatted for quite a while and later again as I bought some of her self-made incense (a selection of herbs). I'd definitely recommend her (yes, to those of you who are reading this with some sceptical thoughts in your mind - I'm really serious about this!).
The food was nice, too, the tarte flambées were yummy, so were the plates you could get, for example with veggies, chips and several meats or ... fish and chips! LOL. I was delighted about this although I dare say this is NOT that much medieval. Ah well. ;)
The prices there were surprisingly low, too. Yay!!!
Drink was a bit of a... non-existent thing. You could get mineral water and some other such but nothing else. So in the end we bought the Kobold's Fire bottle (wild-roses wine) and shared it. Yay @ me for always having a pocket knife with me. :D So we could open it...
The sword fighting show was excellent - what with Freywild doing it. They really are very good.
We bought lots of yummy foods stuff... like breads and jams... as for jams there was a special stall from some couple who make them all themselves. Now to all those of you who might me making them as well, here are some excellent ideas:
- elderflower & orange
- wild rose
- strawberry & chili
They are absolutely delicious and the combinations are great. Elderflower takes the bitter taste of the oranges, so it's not the combination is a really nice blend. and as for strawberry and chili... ha! it is fire-ish, BUT the spicy taste disappears immediately as the acid of the fruits neutralizes it (so I was told :)).
We also bought a couple of things at the Celtic - Viking - stall, jewellery... I got myself a small arrow tip pendant (the sort that I can wear for work without horrifying anyone) and a beautiful green man pendant... and earrings. :) I was given a tiny pentacle earring for free *beams* and the guy there was really nice, packing everything into tiny silky bags and chatting away about this and that... :)
Well, all in all if I'd have to decide again where I'd rather go, Lucerne or Wil, I'd go for Wil again. I just found it more interesting for now and also found the location in a way nicer. Lucerne IS lovely, but I found it very crowded last time we went. I mean, ok, there were many people, but you also had nowhere to go but to leave the faire if you wanted to just stand aside and get out of the crowd. in Wil it was all a bit more *airier*, thus much more relaxed.
here are some interesting webpages, though I'm afraid they might be in German only:
www.freywild.ch
www.flammenherz.ch (= the Celtic Viking stall)
www.adas-music.de (we listened to a couple of songs by them when they played at the market :))
Enjoy!

Date: 2008-05-26 06:39 am (UTC)she'd had it done once, when i was very little, by a gipsy in the czech rep. and that one said something really amazing to her back then which lead her to believe her (later, at the time it was an impossible thought), so... also it was the first time i've seen a stall with someone doing palm reading at all. :)
i think this weekend i've got a major kick in my bum to really get more into exploring runes. it's what drew me from the very beginning, but somehow... hmh... how shall i say... i never felt sure about it? maybe a bit scared? i'm not sure...
heeheeh, thanks, i'll tell her! ;) and you haven't even seen the pic of her with the kobold's fire bottle. ;D

Date: 2008-05-26 06:42 am (UTC)no, she said she can't exactly read the future. it's more about who i am.
she could point out health information which partly already is a major point or might be once, and she could make suggestions about certain areas, but she said that in palm reading you can't predict the future like this. that for you'd have to use an oracle, tarot, runes, etc. :)
i think if i ever meet her again, i'll be doing one of those with her.

Date: 2008-05-26 06:34 am (UTC)The dance class in Luzern was fun but the rest was *bleh*. Thank god I met a bunch of friends there, so we were able to have our own "Ego-Party". ;-) The market was smaller than last year (meaning: less stalls), but at least there were two cool stalls, a shoemaker (knieriem.net) and one selling medieval glass replica. The food was as expensive as ever, so we ate at a restaurant outside the market. More food for the same price. Music... well... usually Duivelspack aren't that bad but this time, they weren't able to really capture the public. Don't know why. The Sandsacks were like a three man copy of Saltatio Mortis. *hrm* Swordfighting by the Basilisks was good, but you definitely had the better swordfighters in Wil. I love Freywild. :-))

Date: 2008-05-26 06:47 am (UTC)That's what was missing in Wil of course - I guess everyone was in Lucerne. *lol*
The market was even smaller? WTF????????????? I found it already smalled and squashy last year?
So… everyone go to Wil next time! :) I certainly will. I find it really upsetting how they're making Lucerne smaller and how it's still more expensive.
I mean… in Wil you had pretty normal, even cheap prices. The plates full of fish n chips or the meat plate were 8.- chf each! And you were STUFFED when you had one. And those were the SMALL plates (I don't even want to know what the big ones were like! *lol*).
And as long as you had a *Korkenzieher* LOL with you, you also got your nice dose of mead or fruit wine. *grin*
There were 2 groups of swordfighters in Wil actually. I dunno the other one's names, but they were doing a smaller show at the other end of the market, while Freywild (they're great! :D) did the big one.
There was a shoemaker stall as well, but somehow I completely forgot to figure out his webpage or addy or whatever. *slapshead*

Date: 2008-05-26 07:07 am (UTC)I think I'll go to Wil next year too.
Well, I went to Luzern primarily for the dance class, and that was fun (although hot and stuffy again in the chapel). We got to show off our dance skills on the market square afterwards. *lol*
Yeah, the prices in Luzern are insane. 15.-- for a meat stick thingy (Fleischspiess) with a small piece of bread is just crazy. I had a big salad and a coke for 20.-- at the restaurant, so much better value there.
If you want, I can ask about the shoemaker in Wil in the Lebendigegeschichte-Forum. Maybe someone on there knows his name.

Date: 2008-05-26 07:12 am (UTC)maybe they could move the dance class to Wil next year. ;) that would be an idea. after all Freywild went to Wil this time, too. heeheeh.
gosh, 15.-! that IS insane. thinking of how much (or should i say how little?) the meat sticks cost at the German Spectaculums anyway... and they're rather big and so yummy!
last year we went to a restaurant in the end too (in Lucerne)... it's sad really. The first time we went to that faire it was really good, including jousting and all that and now it just seems to become less and less... :(
oh yes, it would be great if you could ask around!
i think his shoes were really nice and special. :) thank you! :)
well... looking forward to Weil now! heeheeh.
